Theja Rio’s Angh Wins TIFF Platform Prize, Opens Oscar Pathway for Indian Film

Nagaland filmmaker Theja Rio’s debut feature Angh won the Platform Prize at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival on 20 September 2026. What Is Angh and Who Is Theja Rio?

Angh is the debut feature film of Nagaland filmmaker Theja Rio. The film is set in 1960s Nagaland and follows a Konyak village chief and his young son as their traditional way of life faces deep change.

In the Konyak language, the word Angh means chief. The story centres on Anghba, the last surviving chief of a remote village near the India Myanmar border. The village has been left empty as people move away. Anghba stays back with his ailing wife and his young son, who does not speak. Their quiet life is disturbed by the arrival of an American missionary. The father tries to protect ancestral faith and customs, while the son is drawn to the new beliefs and comforts brought by the mission.

The film is spoken largely in Konyak, a language used by fewer than a quarter of a million people. It was shot on 16mm film by Polish cinematographer Adam Pietkiewicz, which gives it a textured and old world look. The running time is 103 minutes. Under new Academy rules for the 99th Oscars, a non-English film that wins TIFF’s Platform Award can be submitted for Best International Feature consideration without being its country’s official entry. Angh qualifies through this festival route, but it is not yet nominated.

The Academy Awards, popularly called the Oscars, are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the United States. The Best International Feature Film category honours feature films made outside the United States. An international film is defined as a film of more than 40 minutes, produced outside the United States and its territories, with more than 50 percent of dialogue in a language other than English. Angh meets this test because it is an Indian film spoken largely in Konyak.

In May 2026, the Academy approved a major rule change for the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled for 14 March 2027. For the first time, a non-English film can reach the International Feature category through two separate routes. Naga Culture and the Story Set in 1960s Nagaland

Nagaland is a hill state in Northeast India with Kohima as its capital. The state was formed on 1 December 1963 as the 16th state of India. It shares an international border with Myanmar in the east. The state is home to many Naga tribes, each with its own language, dress, food, dance and customary laws. The Konyak community is one of the largest Naga groups and lives mainly in Mon district in northern Nagaland and across the border in Myanmar.

In Konyak custom, the Angh is the hereditary village chief. The Angh’s house, often called the Angh house, is both a residence and a symbol of authority. Villages such as Longwa, which sits on the India Myanmar border, are well known for this system, where one chief’s house is said to lie in two countries. Konyaks were historically known as headhunters and for facial tattoos that marked status and bravery. By the mid 20th century, most Konyaks had given up these practices as new faiths, schools and administration reached the hills.

Angh is placed in this period of transition in the early 1960s. This was the time when Nagaland had just become a state and Christian missionary activity had already changed social life in many villages. The film shows how change does not arrive only through sermons. It also arrives through language, clothes, schooling, medicine and small material comforts offered by the mission. The father holds on to rituals and memory, while the son feels pulled toward a different future. Through this family story, the film records questions of faith, home, identity and letting go that many communities faced during that decade.

Significance for Nagaland Cinema and Indian Films at the Oscars

The win is a landmark for Nagaland because the state has almost no formal film industry. Rio has said in interviews that his region has few professional actors and limited studio support. For Angh, his team street cast in villages and selected people who already understood the culture shown on screen. Many had never stood on a film set before. Kohima did not have a working cinema hall for a long period, so local viewing depended on television, video libraries and travelling screenings. A top prize at a festival that shows nearly 300 films places Naga stories, language and craft before producers, distributors and festival programmers from around the world.

The result also matters for how India is seen at the Oscars. India has never won the Best International Feature Film award. Only three Indian films have been nominated in this category in the past, which was earlier called Best Foreign Language Film.
